I had trouble with the oyster stitch as well and I only managed to do it when I looked elsewhere for instructions...I couldn't make Sharon's instructions work I believe thepicture is mirror imaged.
do keep going I also had difficulty. I found the hardest part was the twisted chain at the beginning. Think of it as three stages. Twisted chain, needle thro the top of the twisted chain being careful to keep the stitch laying flat, and the framing of the chain with a further chain stitch. Good luck as it is a smashing and effective stitch when mastered
